The Snapshot Interviews are a series of free, engaging, 30-minute conversations with leading voices in genealogy and family history. Designed to be brief yet impactful, these interviews offer a snapshot in time of the guest’s expertise, insights, and perspectives. With a strong focus on audience participation, each session incorporates questions submitted by attendees, making every interview interactive and uniquely tailored. Whether you’re a seasoned genealogist or just starting your journey, these interviews provide fresh ideas, practical tips, and inspiration—all in just half an hour!

All live Snapshot Interviews are hosted via Zoom. After subscribing, you’ll receive event details one week before, and the Zoom link will be sent a day prior to the event.
Can't attend live? Not a problem. Each session will be recorded and available via the website for three months.

Catherine B. W. Desmarais, CG
Catherine has a master’s degree in education from the University of Vermont and teaches at the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy and the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh. Her research and writing are published in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Crossroads, and the Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly.
Michael S. Ramage, J.D., CG
Michael is a professional genealogist, author, lecturer, and General Counsel to the Board for Certification of Genealogists. Mr. Ramage was the first President of the APG Forensic Genealogy Special Interest Group (2020-2022). His 25-year private law practice included contracts, realty and estate law and litigation. His related publications include: Michael S. Ramage, J.D., CG and Catherine B. W. Desmarais, CG, Forensic Genealogy: Theory and Practice (Falls Church, VA: National Genealogical Society, 2024); and the “Forensic Specialization” and “Ethical Considerations” chapters in Professional Genealogy: Preparation, Practice & Standards, Elizabeth Shown Mills, editor (Baltimore, Maryland: Genealogical Publishing Company, 2018).
Blaine Bettinger, PhD, JD, is a professional genealogist specializing in DNA evidence. In 2007 he started The Genetic Genealogist (www.thegeneticgenealogist.com), one of the earliest blogs on the topic. Blaine is the author of The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy, and co-author with Debbie Parker Wayne of the award-winning Genetic Genealogy in Practice, the world’s first genetic genealogy workbook. He also co-authored “Genetics for Genealogy” with Judy Russell in 2018’s Professional Genealogy: Preparation, Practice & Standards (ProGen PPS) (Elizabeth Shown Mills, Author and Editor).
Blaine is or has been an instructor for genetic genealogy courses at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR), Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), and Virtual Institute of Genealogical Research. Blaine is a graduate of ProGen Study Group 21, a trustee for the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, and a member of the DNAngels Board of Directors since 2022 (President since January 2023), and a member of the Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methods (SWGDAM) “Investigative Genetic Genealogy Working Group” since 2019. He is also the founder in 2017 of Genetic Genealogy Tips & Techniques, a very active Facebook group with more than 75,000Paul K. Graham, CG®, CGGsm, AG®, is a professional genealogist specializing in genealogical problem solving in the United States and recent unknown parentage research utilizing DNA. He works as a research manager at AncestryProGenealogists, a position he has held since 2011. In this role, Paul led research for eight episodes of the U.S. version of the Who Do You Think You Are? television show. Paul holds the Certified Genealogist, Accredited Genealogist, and Certified Genetic Genealogist credentials.
Paul is the author of multiple books related to Georgia genealogical research, most notably Georgia Land Lottery Research and three books detailing participants and winners in Georgia’s 1805 and 1807 land lotteries. He has published genealogical case studies, descendant genealogies, and articles on professional topics in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, The Genealogist, the APG Quarterly, and other journals.
His publications have been recognized with awards, including first place in the National Genealogical Society’s Family History Writing Contest in 2013, the ASG Scholar Award for 2012, and the NGS Award for Excellence: Genealogical Methods and Sources, also in 2012. His 1805 Land Lottery publications received the “Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Genealogy” award from the Georgia Genealogical Society.
Paul holds a master’s degree in heritage preservation and a professional certificate in geographic information systems. His personal research interests include historic land use, the post-Civil War history of cities in the U.S. South, and developing biographical accounts of obscure historical characters.
The words Certified Genetic Genealogist and its acronym, CGG, are common law service marks of the Board for Certification of Genealogists® used under license by board certificants after periodic evaluation.Nathan Dylan Goodwin is a writer, genealogist and educator. He was born and raised in Hastings, East Sussex. Having attended school in the town, he then completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio, Film and Television Studies, followed by a Master of Arts degree in Creative Writing at Canterbury Christ Church University. A member of the Society of Authors, he has completed several local history books about Hastings, as well as several works of fiction, including the acclaimed Forensic Genealogist series, the Mrs McDougall Investigates series and the Venator Cold Case series. His other interests include theatre, reading, running, skiing, travelling and, of course, genealogy. He is a qualified teacher, member of the Guild of One-Name Studies and the Society of Genealogists, as well as being a member of the Sussex Family History Group, the Norfolk Family History Society and the Kent Family History Society. He lives in Kent with his husband, son, dog and an assortment of chickens. The Legal Genealogist Judy G. Russell is a genealogist with a law degree. She writes, teaches and lectures on a wide variety of genealogical topics, providing expert guidance through the murky territory where law and family history intersect. A Colorado native with roots deep in the American south on her mother’s side and entirely in Germany on her father’s side, she holds a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and a law degree from Rutgers School of Law-Newark. Before she retired, she worked as a newspaper reporter, trade association writer, legal investigator, defense attorney, federal prosecutor, law editor and, for more than 20 years, as an adjunct member of the faculty at Rutgers Law School.
She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the National Genealogical Society and numerous state and regional genealogical societies. A recipient of the Silver Tray Award from the Utah Genealogical Society and the 2017 Award of Excellence from the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, she now serves as a member of the NGSQ editorial board.
An internationally-known lecturer and course coordinator and faculty member at numerous genealogical institutes, she holds credentials as a Certified Genealogist® and Certified Genealogical Lecturer℠ from the Board for Certification of Genealogists®. Her award-winning blog appears at The Legal Genealogist website (https://www.legalgenealogist.com).From DNA to historical maps, from research methods to historical occupations, Dr. Sophie Kay is a professional genealogist and geneticist at Khronicle® (www.khronicle.co.uk) who loves all manner of family history research challenges. She’s the Ancestry and Genealogy Expert for popular archaeology show, Time Team, and the specialist DNA Tutor for the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, where she leads their Certificate qualifications in genetic genealogy. She’s a Member of AGRA, a UK organisation of professional genealogists, and also specialises in research methodology and historical maps.
